VEGETABLE OILS HAVE HIGH LEVEL OF CHOLESTEROL...AVOID THEM!

Don’t use Vegetable oil, they are high in cholesterol!!

This is simply the most confused fact that has been circulating in the WWW for a very long time. Some consumers have got the impression that cooking oil or any edible oil for that matter, contains high level of cholesterol. And to make matters worse, several of the websites that I have come across are supporting this false claim.

FACT : Lets get the fact straight.
FIRSTLY, all edible oil of plant origin, including the likes, of soy, canola, corn, peanut, olive, coconut, palm…and many more have extremely low level of cholesterol.

SECONDLY, the cholesterol level is so low and insignificant that for identification purposes, these edible oils are considered to be as "cholesterol free".

However, edible oils or fats which are of animal origin including the likes of tallow, lard etc have significant level of cholesterol content.

Margerine is Just 1 Molecule Away from Plastic - BUSTED!

The Issue of Butter Vs Margarine has been circulating on the WWW for quite some time. Here are some of the explaination to the question and claims raised by the ignorant individual.

The issue of Butter versus Margarine

1. Margarine is a fatty solid butter substitute consisting of a blend of hydrogenated vegetable oils mixed with emulsifiers, vitamins, coloring matter, and other ingridient.

ANS: Not entirely true. Some margarine like the palm based margarine does not contain hydrogenated fats and are "trans free". There are no issues with the other added ingridients like emulsifier and vitamins. The coloring in palm based margarine are natural, while in others, they are permitted food based coloring matter. Another fact which needs to be emphasisied is that Palm Oil in it's natural state is semi solid. Therefore, there is no requirement for hydrogenation because there are sufficient solid fats in palm oil to formulate margarine. The same cannot be said of other oils like soybean, canola, olive, corn, sunflower and others.


2. Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Eating margarine can ncrease heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods

ANS: Butter has more calories than margarine and likewise butter contains more saturated fat than margarine. The incresed in heart disease in woman eating margarine over those eating butter has never been proven so is the absorbtion in women.


3. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

ANS : Butter and margarine have more or less the same amount of nutritional benefits. In any case it is quite common for margarines nowdays to be fortified with vitamin E and beta carotene. As far as the time line of their existance, I don't think this is an issue at all. Margarine has been developed and tested vigorously before they were first introduced as food items and they are made from vegetable fats which are natural and not synthetic.


4. Very high in trans fatty acids. Triple risk of coronary heart disease. Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol). Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) ... Increases the risk of cancers by up to five fold... Lowers quality of breast milk..Decreases immune response... Decreases insulin response.

ANS: This is only true for non palm based margarine. Like what I have stressed earlier, PALM BASED MARGARINE ARE "TRANS FREE". Partial hydrogenation is not required because there are sufficient natural solid fat in Palm Oil to form the solid body for margarine. Consequently, the other issues which you raised do not apply.


5. HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING. Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC. And margarine is initially BLACK, but it is DYED YELLOW to look like butter. These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

ANS: Absolutely not true. Margarine is not one molecule away from being plastic nor it is initially black but is dyed yellow. The main ingridient in margrine is edible oil and fats. Again, hydrogenation is only carried out if polyunsaturated edible oils are used as the main ingridient. If natural solid fat for example from palm oil is used as the main ingridient, then hydrogenation is totally not required. Therefore, no trans fatty acid will be present. Hydrogenation will not totally change the structure of fatty acid but only the configuration of the hydrogen atom, that is, changing it from “cis” to “trans” which is why is term trans fat is use.I do not know where this guy gets his facts from. But he is correct in emphasizing that it is wise to avoid consuming food with high "trans fat" content


6. YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) ... it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it...even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your. Tupperware and spread that on your toast? Share This With Your Friends.....(Butter them up!)

ANS: We must understand that oils and fats which is the main ingridient of margarine contain fatty acids. And these fatty acids are essential nutrients for our body. This is a fact which everyone must know and understand. The required essential fatty acids can either come from margarine or from other food sources. Don’t listen to ludricrous claims such as the above where no evidence was even put forward. We know that some of theses scare tactics are being purportraited by those who have interest in the success of competing prodcuts.

And if some folks have their way, even the sun would be on sale on eBay. Surprised? Don’t be. It is after all the World Wide Web. Where everything goes in here. For every fact, there’ll be a double dozen of junks, garbage and craps thrown in for good measure, distorting the facts and plunging it towards fiction faster that you can say ‘free mp3 download’.

Hence, why we set up liebusters.blogspot.com. We are just tired of the many lies being bandied about on the WWW. Instead of just talking about them during lunchtime at the old coffee shop where we frequent, we thought why not document them and set up a blog to highlight the many fallacies that are up in the internet. This way, not only us, but everyone can have a reference point on the actual fact about a lie that they stumbled upon on the internet. No only that, everyone too can contribute and point out the correct facts about a lie that they came across on the WWW. Eventually, we can have an archive of corrected lies in this blog.
